- Mercedes will soon introduce a convertible version of its G-Class off-roader
Convertible off-roaders are a small niche of the automotive market, almost entirely consisting of Jeeps and the Ford Bronco. What’s a buyer looking for a high-end SUV with serious trail skills and a soft top to do?
Wait a while. Mercedes is on this.
The company sent us perhaps the shortest press release we’ve ever received. It consisted mostly of the phrase “G-Class Cabriolet” and a shadowy photo that appeared to show a G-Wagen with a Jeep-style open roof.
It appears to have a small open bed rather than an SUV-style roofline.
That’s all we have for now. The release says only that the company “will offer the open-top G-Class in almost every market around the world, including the U.S.” It includes no pricing information.
The current G-Class, one of the world’s most well-regarded off-roaders and perhaps the most luxurious of the bunch, starts at $149,400. Prices for high-end AMG versions routinely approach a quarter million dollars.
Engineering a car to pass safety tests without a rigid roof will doubtless add to that cost.
We’ll bring more info when Mercedes has more to say.
