Mercedes-Benz has recalled 1,899 copies of its AMG EQE SUV from model years 2024-2025 because they may not produce sufficient noise to warn pedestrians of their presence.
Electric vehicles (EVs) typically make very little noise unless their designers intentionally add noise. That can be unsafe, as pedestrians may not hear them coming. Therefore, federal law requires them to emit sound at a certain decibel level, which increases with their speed.
Mercedes tells federal safety regulators that the EQE SUV may have improper software, which prevents the noise from increasing in volume as the vehicle speeds up.
The company is aware of no accidents related to the issue, which was identified during internal testing.
Dealers will fix the issue with a software update.
By law, dealers are not allowed to charge for recall repairs.
Automakers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely get them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. To determine if your car is one of them, use the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
