Mercedes Recalls EQB Over Fire Risk

Mercedes-Benz has recalled 169 EQB SUVs from model years 2022 and 2023 because a battery problem could lead to a vehicle fire. The company is asking owners not to charge the batteries beyond 80% full until dealers have had the chance to complete repairs.

The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that “variations during an early-stage production period” may have left some batteries “insufficiently robust at [a] high state of charge.”

Mechanical damage to the battery or “electric current ripples in the charging infrastructure” could contribute to a fire in those batteries.

The company knows of fire reports outside the U.S., but none within it.

Dealers will install protective software to limit the danger. Software updates are typically quick service appointments.

By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.

Automakers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely get them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. To find out if your car is one of them, check the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
