Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall alert for more than 61,000 SUVs because a misaligned air conditioning hose can leak water into the front footwells and onto electrical components. That can cause some electrical components to malfunction or even create a short circuit that could lead to a fire.
Affected models include:
- 2020-2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE, including AMG models
- 2020-2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS, including AMG models
- 2021 Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600
Mercedes is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue. But the company says that, as footwells grow damp, “the automatic emergency call (eCall) might not be available, the vehicle might not be able to be unlocked and/or started; and the engine limp-home mode might be activated during driving.”
Owners might notice damp carpet or unexplained moisture on the inside of the windows as the problem develops.
Dealers will inspect the routing of the air conditioning hose and correct it if necessary.
