Mercedes-Benz GLB Debuts as Small EV With Big Screens

  • The redesigned GLB small SUV debuts globally on Dec. 8 as an electric vehicle, likely replacing the EQB
  • The second-generation GLB will have an optional Superscreen display of screens across the entire dash

Mercedes-Benz will be leaning into its Superscreen wall of digital displays on the redesigned GLB. The subcompact luxury SUV, expected for the 2027 model year, officially debuts to the world on Dec. 8, but Mercedes revealed its new interior design on Tuesday. The company also revealed there will be an electric GLB.

In a press release touting the small crossover’s extreme temperature testing in Sindelfingen, Germany, Mercedes said, “The climate control heats the interior twice as fast as its predecessor – and even undercuts the heating time of an ICE-powered vehicle.”

In February, Mercedes reversed course on branding its electric vehicle lineup with the “EQ” designation, where the EQS was the electric full-size sedan and the venerable S-Class remained as the combustion version. Same with the EQE and the E-Class, as well as the EQB and the GLB. Mercedes also ditched the distinct design language of the more aerodynamically optimized electric EQ models. Now, shoppers can choose the same body style with either gas or electric powertrains.

Mercedes hasn’t provided details about the gas version of the GLB, and it remains to be seen when it will launch and in which markets. The altered approach to electric luxury also included toning down the huge Hyperscreen that converted Mercedes’ classic luxury dash design into a wall of screens. The result was the Superscreen.

The massive digital display spans the dash, but is still flanked by the circular vents that once took center stage in the GLB’s cockpit design. It seems unlikely Mercedes would have an entirely different dash design without the Superscreen, but we can’t say for sure.

The MBUX Superscreen comprises three screens housed under a single pane of glass. The vehicle features a digital instrument cluster for the driver, a center touchscreen infotainment system, and a passenger display screen to assist with navigation and multimedia streaming. It appears as if climate functions are relegated to the touchscreen. A new steering wheel design brings back two old features “by popular demand”: a rocker switch for cruise control and a roller dial for volume. Those interfaces replace the haptic buttons, which many users found challenging to master.

The Superscreen has been used in the redesigned E-Class as well as the new 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA.

Images also reveal a floating center console with tiered storage and concave doors with deep storage pockets. Optimizing space in the small crossover SUV has always been a priority, and this remains true with the second-generation model.

Mercedes says a third row will be offered once again. Mercedes didn’t reveal specs, but promised that there would be more headroom in the first two rows, and more legroom in the second row. A panoramic glass roof also lends a sense of space and features technology that keeps heat and sun out when it’s hot, yet retains heat when it’s cold outside.

The available panoramic roof features a transparency setting that allows you to adjust the amount of light that can be admitted, and it can be optioned to display a starry sky with a pixelated Mercedes Tri-Star logo.

The new GLB will feature the latest operating system that allegedly “thinks, learns, and evolves with the driver.” The supercomputer will handle inputs from up to 10 cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and five radar sensors for more advanced driver-assist systems as standard.
