Mazda introduced an all-new compact SUV for 2023 that challenged what many shoppers think of the Japanese brand. Mazda has long been known for handsome, athletic on-road cars and SUVs. But the 2023 Mazda CX-50 was capable off the road, too.
It carved a niche between nimble commuter and weekend sand-seeker. Our expert reviewer said it was “outdoorsy, but not really an off-roader,” with “some appreciable degree of driver engagement” beyond what most compact SUVs offer.
But that wasn’t enough for Mazda. The company has retuned the CX-50’s handling for 2024 in search of a purer version of that crisp responsiveness Mazda buyers seek.
The 2024 CX-50 gets new suspension dampers and “a recalibrated electric power-assist steering system,” Mazda says.
The 2024 CX-50 also loses its base trim. The entry-level CX-50 S is gone from the lineup. That can make prices look artificially higher. But eliminating a cheap trim level no one was buying doesn’t change the actual price most buyers pay.
The least-expensive model for 2024 is the CX-50 2.5 S Select. It ships with 17-inch black metallic alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control with rear passenger vents, a leather-wrapped shifter and steering wheel, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It starts at $30,300, a $1,350 bump over its 2023 equivalent.
Curiously, the price of one trim level has dropped. The CX-50 2.5 S Premium sees a $1,150 discount for 2024. It features a power-sliding panoramic moonroof, a Bose 12-speaker premium audio system, and, for 2024, wireless phone charging.

Mazda also charges a mandatory $1,375 destination fee in 49 states and $1,420 in Alaska.
