Mazda has recalled 104,854 CX-70 and CX-90 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUVs from model years 2024-2025 because their fuel gauges may not give an accurate reading. That could lead owners to run out of fuel without warning.
Mazda tells federal safety officials that the problem is mechanical, but can be fixed with software. When owners fill the tank with fuel that contains ethanol, it can react with materials on a circuit board in the gauge that measures the fuel level. That can lead to inaccurate readings.
The company can fix the issue with a software update. Since these vehicles can’t receive software updates over the air, owners must bring them to the dealership to have the patch installed.
By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.
