Mazda introduced a big, sophisticated new flagship SUV last year, the CX-90. Along with it came a sophisticated buying process. The 2024 CX-90 comes with a choice of two powertrains – a turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine or a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) setup. The gas-powered version comes in eight trim levels. The plug-in model comes in three.
Eleven trim levels are a LOT to choose from after you’ve already picked the car you want.
Mazda will make the process a little easier for 2025 by dropping two. The PHEV will keep its three, while the gas-powered model will get a simpler order sheet.
One trim is new: The mid-level Premium Sport is essentially what other automakers might call a midnight edition or blackout package. It gets darkened exterior trim, black badges, Mazda’s Mi-Drive system of driving modes, an upgraded audio system, and a panoramic sunroof.
Otherwise, changes for the new model year are minor. Even the price barely budges, with some trim levels increasing by as little as $80. The 2025 Mazda CX-90 is set to arrive at dealerships later this summer.
With 2025 models so similar to 2024 models, shoppers might want to try negotiating the older model’s price. Dealers sometimes accept less to move “last year’s model” off the lots, even if it’s substantially the same as the new car.
