Electric car startup Lucid issued three recall orders at once this week, all affecting Air sedans from model years 2022 and 2023. However, two of the three problems can be fixed with remote software updates. Only one requires owners to bring cars in for repair.
The largest of the three affects about 5,500 of the cars. The company says those models may have loose windshield wiper arm nuts, which can cause the wipers to fail. Lucid service centers will fix that problem by tightening the nuts and replacing any damaged wiper components.
A second affects 778 cars and seems more alarming. The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the cars can lose drive power suddenly because of a software error. Owners don’t need to bring the cars in for repair, however; Lucid says it can fix the problem with an over-the-air software update.
The third affects just 59 vehicles that haven’t accepted a software update. Their rearview cameras can fail intermittently, the company says. The company has not figured out why the problem happens to some owners but says a software update eliminates the risk. The company “is issuing this recall to encourage these Lucid Air Owners to install the latest version of the software.”
