Those considering a BMW M5 are about to have a more complicated decision to make. For 2021, there will be two M5 models to choose from. A lighter, more powerful BMW M5 CS will join the lineup in January.
The usual BMW formula is to build luxurious models that aim to be a bit sportier than their rivals, then offer a separate, high-performance edition of those cars for a much higher price. The 2021 BMW 5-Series, for instance, is perhaps the most performance-oriented premium midsize luxury sedan and comes at a starting price of $54,200. The 2021 BMW M5, however, is a ferocious beast with a more powerful engine, race-tuned suspension, stickier tires. It also incorporates other engineering tricks to speed up a car, and costs nearly double that price.
Owning one involves compromises, as the same stiff ride that makes them quicker around a track can make for a jarring commute.
For 2021, buyers will also have the option of an M5 CS (Competition Sport). It will carry the same 4.4-liter twin turbo V8 as the M5, but tuned to put out 635 horsepower – 18 more than the regular M5. It’s 154 pounds lighter, thanks to carbon fiber used in seat construction, and a few tricks BMW hasn’t revealed. The suspension has been tightened a bit from the already-sport-tuned setting of the M5, and new Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires come standard.
