New on the subcompact SUV scene is the performance-oriented 2024 Dodge Hornet R/T. Under the hood is a plug-in hybrid drivetrain featuring a 1.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 288 horsepower and a whopping 383 lb-ft of torque. A 6-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive deliver the power with help from an electric motor on the rear axle.
The Hornet R/T can travel 33 miles solely on electric power before the gas engine kicks in, and it sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds. It’s currently a bit of a loner in the segment, but the competition that comes closest includes the Mazda CX-30 Turbo, the Hyundai Kona N, and the Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid.
Let’s take a look inside the 2024 Dodge Hornet R/T.
Passenger Room and Comfort
The 2024 Dodge Hornet R/T, built in Italy, features supportive cloth front seats with big bolsters to better hold occupants around the corners. The driver gets an 8-way power-adjustable memory seat with 4-way lumbar, the front passenger gets a 6-way manual-adjustable seat, and both are heated. Stepping up to the R/T Plus adds leather upholstery and ventilated front seats.
A manually tilting and telescoping steering wheel with paddle shifters lets the driver find the perfect angle of attack. It’s also heated, always a welcome feature when the weather is chilly.
Subcompact SUVs are often tight in the back, and the Hornet R/T is no exception. While its 38 inches of rear legroom is more generous than you’ll find in the CX-30 and Kona N, it’s still not the greatest for taller folks.
Features and Technology
Dodge put big screens in the Hornet R/T cabin, starting with a configurable 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster in front of the driver. That’s flanked on the right by a 10.25-inch customizable infotainment touchscreen that can store five user profiles. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration are standard, along with Amazon Alexa connectivity, Wi-Fi hot spot capability, and two types of USB charging ports. The R/T Plus adds a wireless cell phone charging pad and integrated TomTom navigation.
The Hornet R/T offers dual-zone automatic climate control and a 6-speaker stereo; the R/T Plus upgrades to a 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.
Materials and Design
Dodge designed the Hornet R/T interior to feel more like the cockpit of a sports car than a subcompact SUV. The touchscreen and climate controls are angled toward the driver. The steering wheel is leather-wrapped, and the standard seats are cloth with leatherette. The R/T Plus adds leather seat upholstery. A black headliner sets a businesslike mood across the lineup, and available red leather or Alcantara seats with red accents amp up the performance attitude. There are also some soft-touch surfaces classing up the cabin.
Cargo Room and Flexibility
The Hornet R/T gives up some of its cargo space to a hybrid battery, so there’s a modest 22.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats. That’s still more than the non-hybrid CX-30 (20.2) and Kona N (19.2). The cargo room increases to 50.5 cubic feet with the rear seats down. Adding some extra utility to this new subcompact Dodge SUV is a 60/40-split bench with a ski pass-through.
