The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV is a full-size electric pickup truck that’s set to compete against the likes of the Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T, and Tesla Cybertruck. Available as a crew cab model with a nearly 6-foot bed, the Silverado EV is motivated by two electric motors and comes standard with 4-wheel drive (4WD).
In base WT trim the Silverado EV produces 510 horsepower and has an EPA-rated maximum driving range of 450 miles. The range-topping RST First Edition is slated to provide a total of 754 horsepower when operating in its WOW (Wide Open Watts) driving mode.
Based on GM’s Ultium electric vehicle architecture, the Silverado EV has many clever details, such as a waterproof front trunk (a frunk) and movable midgate between the cabin and cargo bed.
While it might be engineered for hauling and towing, the Silverado EV also is a surprisingly high-tech take on the traditional pickup. Fleet and commercial sales begin this year, with consumer sales scheduled to start in summer 2024.
Let’s take a look inside the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV.
Passenger Room and Comfort
There should be plenty of space for adults of all shapes and sizes in the Silverado EV’s 5-passenger cabin. Unlike the gas or diesel-powered Silverado, which comes with myriad cabin and cargo bed lengths, Silverado EV shoppers have but one choice.
This consists of a 4-door crew cab with a 5-foot-11-inch cargo bed. Front and rear legroom measures 44.8 and 44.3 inches, respectively. For comparison, the Ford F-150 Lightning has 43.9 and 43.6.
The Silverado EV and the Lightning are within, ahem, a hair of each other when it comes to interior headroom. In the Chevy (WT trim) you get 41.9 and 39.7 inches, respectively, front and rear, while the Ford offers 40.8 and 40.4.
The standard WT trim is equipped with cloth seating upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, keyless entry, push-button start, and dual-zone climate control.
Features and Tech
Chevrolet equips the entry-level Silverado EV WT with an 8-inch digital instrument display and 11-inch touchscreen positioned vertically in the center of the dashboard. Standard tech touches include all-important Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with Google Assistant, navigation, and voice commands.
In the WT, temperature and fan settings are adjusted using control knobs positioned in the center of the dashboard, just above the console separating the driver and front passenger seat. In higher trims, such as the RST First Edition, climate controls migrate into the infotainment touchscreen.
The RST features an 11-inch digital instrument display mounted flush alongside a 17-inch infotainment touchscreen. As the range-topping model, the RST boasts features like wireless device charging, navigation, satellite radio, Wi-Fi hot spot, Bose audio system, and much more. It also comes with GM’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system, which allows for hands-free driving on more than 400,000 miles of roads throughout North America.
Also worth noting is an impressive lineup of standard driver assists. The workhorse Silverado EV WT includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, forward collision warning, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and adaptive cruise control. Stepping up to the RST brings with it Super Cruise, reverse automatic emergency braking, a surround-view parking camera, traffic sign recognition, and a head-up instrument display.
Materials and Design
Chevrolet doesn’t scrimp with comfort and tech features in the more utilitarian (i.e. less expensive) WT trims. All controls are within easy reach, and we expect the cloth seats to be comfortably accommodating on routine drives or longer trips.
Still, because the WT is targeted at fleet buyers and businesses, it has abundant and rather dull black plastic throughout its cabin. If you’re looking for fancy trimmings in your electric-powered pickup, the RST is the better choice. It comes with leather seating with contrasting stitching, heated and ventilated front seats, upgraded plastic trim on the dash and door panels, and an airy panoramic glass roof.
Cargo Room and Flexibility
This is where the Chevrolet engineering team had some fun. Similar to its rival, the Ford F-150 Lightning, the Silverado EV has a front-mounted trunk. It offers 10.7 cubic feet of cargo volume. The 4-door crew cab also boasts a giant center console storage bin, multiple cup holders, and large door pockets.
But the biggest party trick is the Silverado EV’s available midgate pass-through cargo system. To haul extra-long cargo, the rear seats flip forward and the wall between the cabin and cargo bed can be folded flat. Even the rear window can be removed for especially large and bulky items that would otherwise exceed the limits of the 5-foot, 11-inch cargo bed.
