Let’s Take a Look Inside the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale

The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale is a subcompact, 5-seat SUV with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain and standard all-wheel (AWD) drive. In terms of its size and price, this new addition to the Alfa Romeo lineup is positioned below the Italian automaker’s larger and more expensive compact luxury SUV, the Stelvio.

There are three trims available: Sport, Ti, and Veloce. All come with a turbocharged 1.3-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine paired with an electric motor for a combined 285 horsepower and 347 lb-ft of torque. A 6-speed automatic sends power to all four wheels.

Being a plug-in hybrid, the Tonale provides up to 32 miles of electric driving range before the gas-fed engine springs into action. When using a 240-volt outlet, you can recharge the battery in approximately 2.5 hours.

Direct rivals to this upstart Alfa Romeo SUV include the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and Volvo XC40. The Tonale is the only one among this group available as a PHEV.

Let’s take a look inside the Tonale and see some of what it has to offer.

Passenger Room and Comfort

Stretching 178.3 inches in length, the Tonale is a few inches longer than competitors such as the BMW X1 and Audi Q3. For SUV shoppers who routinely travel with a full complement of passengers, the Tonale’s 38 inches of rear legroom means ample space for adults. Equally important is that there’s room for toes underneath the front seats.

People in colder climates will appreciate that heated front seats and steering wheel are standard. Beginning with the midrange Ti, a power moonroof is optional, as are option packages that include extras like aluminum shift paddles, heated and ventilated front seats, aluminum pedals, and driver seat memory settings.

As for its ride comfort, the suspension is compliant and tuned softer than you expect for such a sporty-looking SUV. When the roads you’re traveling are rough and bumpy, the Tonale doesn’t lose its cool. The Veloce trim straddles an adaptive suspension that allows the driver to adjust between various degrees of ride firmness.

Features and Tech

In front of the driver is a configurable 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and, in the center of the dash, a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen. This duo is standard on every Tonale. Standard features are plentiful and include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, wireless device charging, navigation, satellite radio, two USB ports, and a 6-speaker audio system.

That’s a lot of standard tech touches for a small luxury SUV. When adding other tech-related items, you’re limited to an extra pair of USB ports and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system grouped into the Premium Interior and Sound Package (including black leather seating surfaces).

The Tonale also boasts many standard driver aids, such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, driver attention monitor, lane-keep assist, pedestrian and cyclist detection, traffic sign recognition, and more. The Active Assist Package, available on all three Tonale trims, includes parking assistance, a 360-degree parking camera, and adaptive cruise control with steering inputs.

A High-Performance Driving Package is available to the Ti and equipped with the Veloce. The contents include aluminum paddle shifters on the steering wheel, aluminum pedals, and red brake calipers.

Materials and Design

While the Tonale sports an extroverted exterior, the cabin is surprisingly subdued in color options. The base Sprint features cloth sport seats with what Alfa calls “biscotto” stitching – proving that even describing “tan” sounds better in Italian.

Black leather seat upholstery is optional in the Ti and Veloce trims. The latter’s upholstery provides a splash of color with its standard black and red suede-like Alcantara upholstery, with red highlights on the seats and red stitching on the dashboard and door panels. The Ti and Veloce trims have some metal trim pieces to liven up their interiors, too.

A little more playfulness in the cabin would be lovely, but, all in all, this is an attractive and nicely thought-out interior.

Cargo Room and Flexibility

Cargo space behind the split-folding rear seatback measures 22.9 cubic feet. Fold the second row down, and the hold expands to roughly 50 cubic feet of capacity. That’s fair to average for a subcompact SUV. Competing models like the BMW X1 and Volvo XC40 hold an edge regarding cargo volume.

A manual liftgate is standard on the Tonale Sprint, but the Ti and Veloce employ a hands-free power liftgate.
