Set to debut in New York, Land Rover promised that its Discovery Vision Concept would preview a host of new techno touches destined to appear in future production models. The first of those advanced features, a virtual imaging capability it calls the Transparent Hood, combines cameras located on the front of the vehicle with a sophisticated full-width heads-up display at the bottom of the windshield. This system offers an unobstructed view of what lies immediately underneath and ahead of the vehicle.

Effectively creating a see-through engine bay that provides a look at things outside of the driver’s normal field of vision, the Transparent Hood techology affords an obvious advantage when the vehicle is traversing challenging off-road venues or maneuvering in close quarters. The system also presents supplemental information to the driver on the vehicle’s speed, attitude and positioning of its front wheels.

Class of 2015: New Vehicles Ready to Roll

"As our vehicles become more capable and offer increasing autonomy off-road, we will ensure the driver has the confidence to progress over any terrain," noted Dr. Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology for Jaguar Land Rover. "We are developing new technologies including the Transparent Hood to give drivers an augmented view of reality to help them tackle anything from the toughest off-road route to the tight confines of urban parking."
