Jeep has recalled approximately 43,000 manual-transmission-equipped 2018-2020 Wranglers and 2020 Gladiator pickups to fix a problem that could result in a catastrophic transmission failure. The company is aware of one accident, but no injuries, related to the defect.
Jeep says the problem occurs when heavy use of the transmission causes the clutch pressure plate to overheat. The plate can crack, transferring energy to the clutch plate itself, which can also fracture. This renders the vehicle inoperable, and in rare cases, could lead to a vehicle fire.
Jeep reports that drivers may smell burning clutch before the problem occurs. Given that many people who buy a manual Jeep to take off-road, we’d venture that working the transmission hard and burning a bit of clutch may not be unusual for some Jeep drivers. For the time being, we urge them to take the smell more seriously than usual.
The remedy is a software update, which dials back engine torque when the transmission temperature rises to near dangerous levels. This allows it to cool safely while the vehicle is being driven.
