Jeep recalled 320,065 Wrangler 4xe SUVs from model years 2020-2025 and Grand Cherokee 4xe SUVs from model years 2022-2026 because a defect in their batteries could lead to a vehicle fire.
Some of the vehicles received a software update as part of an earlier recall.
Jeep’s 4xe vehicles are plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The company tells federal safety officials that cells in their high-voltage batteries may be susceptible to damage, which could trigger a fire.
The company is aware of at least 19 fires and one injury, but no deaths, related to the problem. Of the 19 known fires, nine occurred in vehicles that had received the earlier software update.
Engineers are still developing a solution for the problem. When it comes, it will be free.
By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.
Manufacturers recall many cars, often more than once, during their lifespan. Automakers try to contact every owner but don’t always reach them all. Discover if your vehicle has any outstanding recalls with the easy-to-use vehicle identification number (VIN) tool at our recall center.
