Jeep has a new electric SUV on the way and no one – not even Jeep – knows what to call it.
To be precise, Jeep has two all-electric SUVs coming to the U.S. for the 2024 model year. One has a name. It’s called the 2024 Jeep Recon, and it’s the off-road-oriented model you expect from Jeep.
The other has a naming contest. Jeep intends it as a high-performance luxury SUV meant more for paved surfaces.
If you can come up with a moniker Jeep likes, they’ll pay for you and three friends to spend a week at Wyoming’s Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. You have until Friday to submit your ideas on Jeep’s website.
Kinda Sorta Called the Wagoneer S, For Now
Jeep unveiled the vehicle in September alongside a plug-in hybrid version of its Grand Wagoneer full-size SUV.
At the time, Chief Design Officer Ralph Gilles said, “We’re calling it Wagoneer S for now.”
But that name was confusing at best. Jeep’s Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are full-size and stretched-full-size SUVs. The yet-to-be-named model is midsize – closer to the Grand Cherokee in size.
Performance-Focused
The temporary Wagoneer S is a sleek, speedy thing. In profile, it looks like the angular, squarish SUVs that made Jeep famous. But that boxy roofline is an illusion. A huge roofline spoiler hides that the roof itself slopes rakishly. It wears a thin interpretation of the classic Jeep seven-slot grille, sitting under a curved line of LEDs.
“We’re aiming for a zero-to-sixty speed of three-and-a-half seconds,” Gilles said. “That’s Trackhawk territory.”
Running Out of Heritage
We’re not entirely sure what Jeep should call it, either. The brand has historically offered a small lineup. That gives it a small jar of historical names to choose from, and they’re almost all in use.
With a Cherokee, a Grand Cherokee, a Wagoneer, a Grand Wagoneer, and a Wrangler already in dealerships, the brand is mostly out of names with heritage to draw on.
