Jaguar will sell nothing but electric cars within nine years. Its Land Rover sister brand will bring six electric vehicles to market in the next five years, though it does not plan to swear off gasoline completely.
The announcement makes the two the latest in a group of luxury car makers to announce a switch to 100 percent electric vehicles (EVs) in the future.
The two brands, both owned by India’s Tata Motors, had very little information to offer on specific models. Jaguar did say that it will not be replacing its current top-of-the-line XJ model with another generation. It did say it’s developing an all-new EV platform.
Land Rover will develop its own separate EV platform. Jaguar Land Rover CEO Thierry Bolloré says this gives the two brands distinct identities. The first all-electric Land Rover will appear by 2024.
the company aims to achieve net-zero emissions across all its global operations by 2039, and says that “clean-hydrogen fuel-cell power” is also “being developed in preparation for future demand.”
