Hyundai has recalled 51,587 Tucson SUVs from model years 2022-2024 equipped with optional trailer hitches. The company is asking owners to park their cars outside, away from structures, until dealers have completed repairs.
Hyundai tells federal safety officials that an optional trailer hitch wiring harness “may have been installed in a vehicle location susceptible to water ingress.” If water gets into the harness, the resulting short circuit “could result in trailer lamps or vehicle stop lamps becoming inoperative. In rare cases, an electrical short within the module may occur, which could lead to overheating, melting, or, in isolated instances, ignition.”
The company is aware of at least three fires and 287 reports of lighting failure related to the problem, but no deaths or injuries.
Dealers will fix the problem by replacing the wiring harness with a redesigned part.
By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.
Manufacturers recall many cars, often more than once, during their lifespan. Automakers try to contact every owner but don’t always reach them all. Discover if your vehicle has any outstanding recalls with the easy-to-use vehicle identification number (VIN) tool at our recall center.
