Speaking to the trade journal Automotive News, Hyundai Motor America CEO Dave Zuchowski confirmed big changes are on the way for the automaker’s SUV crossover lineup with broader and better differentiated models. The move is in response to the rapidly growing segment, which is coming at the expense of traditional sedans.

At the entry level, Hyundai plans to introduce a pair of new small SUVs. The first, a B-Segment rival to vehicles like the Chevy Trax and Honda HR-V, which will go on sale in early 2018. It will be followed shortly thereafter by an even-smaller A-segment crossover. The current Tucson, which will become the middle member of the firm’s lineup, is due for its own significant refresh.

Hyundai’s future agenda also involves a major recasting of the two larger members of its SUV crossover set. Topping the range, the next-gen Hyundai Santa Fe will be renamed and grow to become a far-more-accommodating 3-row model than the current iteration. While remaining closer to its current size, the upcoming 5-passenger Santa Fe Sport is set to adopt a more rugged Jeep-like character, likely gaining greater off-road capability in the process.
