Later this month, Hyundai dealers will start selling one of the most distinctive electric vehicles (EVs) we’ve seen year. The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 splits the difference between a compact crossover and a small hatchback and does it with an entirely original sense of style.
The Ioniq 5 will start at $39,700. Hyundai notes that after the maximum $7,500 federal tax credit, that gives the Ioniq 5 an “effective price” of $32,200. Not all buyers will qualify for the full tax incentive. Purchase also requires a $1,225 destination fee.
The Ioniq 5 is available with two battery packs – one good for 58 kilowatt-hours and one for 77.4 kWh. Each can be paired with a single motor powering just the rear wheels or a pair of motors, one per axle, creating an all-wheel-drive setup.

Distinctive Inside and Out
Most automakers (including Hyundai) give their lineups a common design language that makes each vehicle resemble the rest of the cars on its lot. But Hyundai has dispensed with that idea for the Ioniq 5. It looks like nothing else on the road. It’s rounded at the corners but otherwise carries a boxy theme. Pixelated lighting elements and a sharp diagonal crease through the doors give it a 1980s, 8-bit aesthetic.
Inside, it boasts a lot more space than its small-car footprint would make you think. A flat load floor (there’s no need for a transmission tunnel in an electric car) allows the center console to slide all the way to the front or rear of the cabin. The front seats fold flat, complete with recliner-style leg rests.
The Ioniq 5’s price puts it neatly into competition with midsize electric SUVs like the Ford Mustang Mach-E and VW ID.4. But it will soon have a home-grown competitor as well. The Kia EV6 is built on the same platform. We expect to know its price any day now.
