If there’s a trend in the automotive world this year, it’s blacked-out cars. Many automakers have introduced special editions of their cars that feature black badges, dark trim, and blacked-out wheels. Hyundai is the latest to join the craze. The Korean automaker has announced a limited run of darkened Sonata sedans, dubbed the 2022 Sonata N-Line Night Edition.
Hyundai set the 2022 Sonata N Line Night Edition price at $34,750 with a destination charge of $1,025.
Dark Accents and Carbon Fiber (Sort Of)
Hyundai says the Night Edition “appeals to enthusiasts with carbon fiber parts, matte black accents, and dark chrome exterior badges.” They’re stretching things just a bit with the carbon fiber claim, but the rest of it is true enough.
The Night Edition features matte black 19-inch wheels, darkened badges, and red-painted brake calipers. Hyundai built the lip spoiler and wheel center caps from carbon fiber reinforced plastic — not quite the same hyper-expensive carbon fiber found on exotic cars with six-figure price tags. But they are something you can’t get on most midsize family cars, and they look sharp.
The Night Edition is available in black or quartz white. Black versions get matte black mirror covers and door handles.
Built on a Sportier Sonata
Toyota’s Nightshade editions, Nissan’s Midnight Editions, and Kia’s Nightfall Package all let buyers get a similar look. But those are strictly appearance packages. They don’t add any zest to performance.
The foundation of Hyundai’s Night Edition comes from the Sonata N-Line, a sportier version of Hyundai’s well-reviewed midsize sedan. The N-Line carries a 290-horsepower turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine – one of the more powerful options available to affordable family car buyers.
The car, Hyundai says, debuted in the Paramount Pictures’ action film Snake Eyes: G.I.
