Hyundai and its Genesis luxury brand have recalled 145,235 electric vehicles (EVs) that can lose drive power due to an electrical problem.

Recalled models include some, but not all, copies of the:

Electric cars have immense batteries that provide the energy for propulsion and small 12-volt batteries like those found in gas-powered cars. The smaller battery does many of the same things in an EV that it does in a gas-powered car, helping start the car and run low-voltage accessories. As with a gas-powered vehicle, the car replenishes the 12-volt battery’s charge as it drives.

However, Hyundai tells federal safety officials at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that in EVs built on specific dates, that system may not work properly. “If the vehicle is driven until the 12-volt battery state-of-charge is fully depleted, the vehicle will lose all motive power, potentially increasing the risk of a crash,” the company says.

Drivers will receive numerous warnings as the problem develops, including an audible chime and warning message on the driver’s screen.

Dealers will fix the problem by updating software, inspecting some electrical parts, and replacing them if needed.
