Hyundai Boulder Off-Road SUV Concept Debuts

  • The Hyundai Boulder off-road SUV concept made a surprise debut at the 2026 New York auto show.
  • It’s just a design study, but the Boulder foreshadows a production midsize pickup truck that Hyundai has planned for the U.S. market.
  • Hyundai’s future truck will be designed and built in the U.S. and hit the market by 2030.

The Hyundai Boulder just bowed at the New York International Auto Show, demonstrating the brand’s intentions to bring body-on-frame vehicles with real towing, hauling, and off-roading capabilities to the U.S. market. It’s unclear when – if ever – we’ll see a production version of the Boulder, but it tells us that Hyundai is serious about entering a competitive off-road space.

Freedom of Adventure

The Boulder concept, which Hyundai is pitching with the tagline “Freedom of Adventure,” can best be described as a midsize 4-door SUV. It rides on a traditional body-on-frame architecture, typically associated with pickup trucks and off-road-oriented SUVs like the Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, and Toyota 4Runner.

Art of Steel

The exterior embraces a design language that Hyundai calls “Art of Steel.” It’s an upright design with pronounced fender flares, safari windows, 37-inch tires, and a big spare tire hanging off the liftgate. It’s a modern interpretation of an old-school off-roader. One exterior quirk that off-road enthusiasts will love: a power drop-down rear window for hauling long objects like surfboards.

The interior of the Hyundai Boulder forgoes screen acreage in favor of tactile controls like knobs and buttons. Grab handles abound, and everything appears wrapped in durable materials that can handle the toughest off-road scenarios.

Truck Harbinger

Hyundai says the Boulder is “a pure design study,” so don’t expect to see this in your local Hyundai showroom anytime soon. That said, Hyundai concepts are often a glimpse at future production models. What Hyundai is definitely saying is that the Boulder previews a new platform that will underpin a U.S.-built midsize pickup truck, set to hit the market by 2030.

As a midsize, body-on-frame pickup, the future Hyundai truck will be in the same competitive set as the Toyota Tacoma, Chevy Colorado, and Ford Ranger. If we take the Boulder’s suggestions of off-road ambitions at face value, we can expect a serious off-road version of Hyundai’s truck to rival the likes of the Tacoma TRD Pro, Colorado ZR2, and Ranger Raptor.

What’s under the hood is anyone’s guess. Hyundai made no mention of what will power its future midsize pickup truck. However, the midsize truck segment has turned to turbocharged 4-cylinder engines as the powerplant of choice. A turbo-4, possibly with a hybrid option, seems the most likely candidate to power Hyundai’s pickup.

“The Boulder Concept demonstrates how Hyundai is seeking to give American customers more of what they want,” Hyundai President and CEO José Muñoz said in a statement. “Body-on-frame vehicles are the backbone of American work and adventure, and we intend to compete in the midsize pickup segment with everything we have… We are entering segments we have never competed in before, and we are doing it the right way: designed in America, built by Americans for American customers.”
