Honda Fitting Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto to Older Accord Models

2021 Honda Accord Hybrid

Honda dealers will now add wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to Accord sedans from model years 2018 through 2022. The upgrade requires a software update. Any Honda dealer can do the work, the company says. It comes at “a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $112, plus a dealer labor charge.”

Software updates are among the quickest and easiest service appointments, so the labor charge should be fairly inexpensive.

The 12th-generation Accord came with both CarPlay and Auto. Each essentially turns your car’s touchscreen into your phone screen, giving you easier access to streaming apps and navigation while driving. But it required a wired connection to operate in most cases. The upgrade allows your phone to connect wirelessly, eliminating the need for a wire in the cabin.

Some drivers might still find themselves connecting their phones to charge them. Many Honda dealers also offer a wireless charging pad upgrade for those who want to eliminate wires.

“The upgrade will be installed at no additional charge on any qualifying Accord models sold as Honda Certified Pre-Owned [CPO] vehicles,” the company says. So, wireless phone compatibility should soon be standard equipment on most Honda CPO cars.

More Upgrades Coming

Honda says the move is part of a larger effort “to maximize lifetime value of in-market Honda vehicles by offering upgrades and new digital services.”

The company sees this as part of its sustainability effort. “Honda has set a global goal to realize carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activities by 2050,” the company explains. “To this end, the company is pursuing a broad range of sustainability initiatives, including exploring ways to add updates that will enhance the ownership experience for current, second, and third owners.”
