Government Orders Ford to Add 3 Million More Cars to Airbag Recall

Ford will soon be recalling 3 million more cars in the ongoing saga of the largest safety recall in history. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has rejected Ford’s appeal claiming that these vehicles shouldn’t be added to the ever-growing list of cars carrying potentially-defective Takata airbag inflators. Ford had argued that slightly different chemistry found in the inflators on these vehicles was safe, but NHTSA disagreed.

The recall will include:

  • 2007-11 Ford Ranger
  • 2006-12 Ford Fusion
  • 2007-10 Ford Edge
  • 2006-12 Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ
  • 2007-10 Lincoln MKX
  • 2006-11 Mercury Milan
  • 2007-09 Mazda B-Series

The defect leads, in rare instances, to airbag inflators rupturing and sending hot metal fragments into the passenger cabin. The inflators are responsible for at least 27 deaths, 18 in the United States, and more than 400 injuries.

Takata (now bankrupt) was the world’s largest provider of airbag inflators, with more than 100 million of the devices built into vehicles by at least 19 automakers.

Despite the massive recall campaign, NHTSA says that nearly 17 million recalled vehicles in the U.S. remain unfixed. Check whether your car has been affected at our recall center.
