GMC Starts Building Hummer Electric SUVs

The 2023 GMC Hummer SUV seen from a front quarter angleIf you’re one of the 45,000 or so Americans who put down a deposit on a GMC Hummer SUV, we have some great news for you. The factory has started producing the electric sport utility. GMC expects customers to receive deliveries by the end of the first quarter.

If the news sounds familiar, you’re probably thinking of the Hummer-badged electric pickup. GMC designed the Hummer electric vehicle (EV) as both a pickup and an SUV. It then built the pickups first – thousands are already on the road.

The SUV version follows, with largely the same mechanical parts. The most powerful Hummer pickups produce up to 1,000 horsepower, while the most powerful Hummer SUVs produce “just” 830. But it features the same Crab Walk 4-wheel steering, allowing it to move almost sideways to negotiate around off-road obstacles, and the same Extract Mode adjustable suspension that can add up to 6 inches of ground clearance at the touch of a button.

When GMC was still accepting reservations, the 2024 Hummer SUV started at $79,995, with fully loaded models surpassing $100,000. But the reservations page is gone from the GMC website, and with it, all references to pricing. So we don’t know what the company will ask for the 2025 edition or when orders will reopen.

The first one to roll out the doors of GM’s Factory ZERO Detroit-Hamtramck facility was auctioned off last month. It earned $500,000 for Tread Lightly!, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting stewardship of outdoor recreation lands.
