GMC Hummer EV Will Reportedly Top More Than 9,000 pounds

The upcoming GMC Hummer electric pickup will tip the scales at up to 9,046 pounds, multiple automotive publications reported today. That weight would make it one of the heaviest non-commercial vehicles ever sold for road use. It’s more than a 2022 GMC Sierra 3500 HD with a crew cab, dual rear wheels, and the LP5 Duramax diesel engine. It’s even more than the military-derived Hummer H1 that was sold in the 1990s.

The weight is said to apply to the Edition 1 trim – a special launch edition boasting 1,000 horsepower. GMC says Edition 1 has a range of 350 miles and a 0 to 60 mph time of 3 seconds. Those numbers would require an enormous battery pack, which may explain the weight.

The Hummer EV is on sale now, with deliveries expected to start this fall. Prices start at $79,995, with the sold-out Edition 1 going for $112,595.

The Hummer EV truck is also enormous. It’s 31 inches longer than that original Hummer, and 8 inches wider than a Chevy Silverado pickup. The SUV version is smaller in nearly every dimension.

But the huge number makes us anxious to see payload and towing figures for the Hummer EV. GMC has not yet released those figures. That hasn’t hurt sales – the Edition 1 reportedly sold out in just 10 minutes.

For comparison, Tesla reports that its upcoming Cybertruck has a curb weight between 5,000 and 6,500 pounds depending on the configuration. Tesla claims an impressive payload capacity of up to 3,500 pounds and a towing capacity of “7,500 plus” pounds. Those numbers likely apply to the most powerful, 3-motor version.
