- General Motors will integrate Apple Music into the infotainment system of its new vehicles.
- The company has removed Apple CarPlay from many vehicles, seeking to replicate much of what it can do with GM’s own system.
Nearly every car for sale in the 2025 and 2026 model years comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, or both. Those systems let a car’s touchscreen mirror your phone’s screen, allowing you to use some phone apps while driving.
General Motors, however, is removing it from future cars. GM drivers will still have access to streaming Apple Music, though.
The company announced this week that Apple Music is “rolling out to select 2025 and newer Cadillac and Chevrolet models, giving drivers direct access to millions of songs, curated playlists, exclusive content, live global radio, and personalized recommendations — all seamlessly integrated into the vehicle’s infotainment system. Availability across additional GM brands will follow.”
Apple Music will be part of the OnStar Basics package, the company says. “That means customers can access their favorite music, audiobook, podcast, and news apps — including Apple Music — at no additional connectivity cost for eight years with their vehicle purchase.”
As with CarPlay, users will be able to control the app entirely with voice commands. Cadillac models equipped with Dolby Atmos will get enhanced Spatial Audio versions of songs.
The move will help bring GM’s cars more in line with those of competitors that use CarPlay. GM officially says it has left Apple’s phone projection service to ensure that it can offer owners the best infotainment experience in its vehicles. However, many industry observers believe the move is motivated by a desire to collect data on drivers’ behavior that would otherwise be sent to Apple.
