Get Ready for Severe Winter Weather

Tire on snow

Winter is showing its teeth right now. This week, from Thursday, Jan. 22, through Saturday, Jan. 24, large swaths of the United States will be hit by rain, sleet, snow, and dangerously low temperatures. Driving conditions may be hazardous at times.

According to the National Weather Service, “A potent mid-level trough pivoting through southeastern Canada will continue producing lake effect snow showers downwind of the Great Lakes through Friday.” This system will move through Upstate New York and New England. The Service also warns of “dangerously cold and very dry Arctic air” expanding into the northern and central plains, upper Midwest, and Great Lakes “before spilling out into the Southern Plains, Mississippi Valley, and Midwest tonight.” Wind chills could drop below -50 degrees in some areas, putting people, pets, and livestock at risk – not to mention cars, trucks, and SUVs.

While Kelley Blue Book is not a weather station, we do offer advice on preparing your vehicle for winter weather, driving in the snow, what to do if you get stuck in a storm, and other helpful information.

Here are a few resources you may want to explore before the worst of this winter storm hits.

Our best advice for winter driving is to avoid unnecessary trips. If you must go out in treacherous conditions, be sure to bundle up, bring emergency supplies, and reduce your driving speed.

Do not despair: Spring is just around the corner. Okay, down the road, over a few hills, and then around the corner. Stay warm and stay safe!
