There is probably a statute of limitations on the number of times websites for car shoppers can say that brand has finally arrived. Journalists keep reaching for that cliché both because it takes a long time for a new marque to make its way into the popular consciousness and because sometimes a new car simply has presence. Its appearance feels like an arrival to be noticed.
Enter the 2023 Genesis G90 – a replacement for the current Genesis flagship sedan. The 2022 G90 starts at $68,350, though Genesis positions it as a rival to more expensive super-luxury sedans like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class or Audi A8. The brand requires just $995 for delivery – the lowest destination fee among luxury automakers.
This isn’t actually a new arrival. Hyundai’s luxury badge officially turns 6 years old this month. It’s arguably been around longer than that, since the first Hyundai Genesis sedan appeared for the 2009 model year.
But soon, a Genesis will pull up next to you at a stoplight and you’ll find yourself gawking in a way you haven’t before. The 2023 G90 just takes up space with a bearing usually associated with the most expensive European luxury sedans.
Just Glamour Shots So Far
We only have the car’s exterior to appreciate for now. It starts with a bulging interpretation of Genesis’s distinctive shield grille, fronting a long hood. The “two-lines” signature lighting theme of new Genesis models is here, with long LED lights that seem to wrap around behind the front wheels. Daytime running lights and headlights are interlaced in the two tight lines, rather than appearing as two separate lamps.
The greenhouse is long, with an angular D-pillar that almost calls Rolls-Royce to mind. A boxy shoulder line lends a note of menace. The car carries itself like a wealthy person’s conspicuously armed bodyguard.
That’s all we know for now. Genesis says the 2023 G90 will be a wheels-up redesign of the current car. We expect the smooth twin-turbo V6 of the current model to return. But we wouldn’t be surprised to see the more powerful V8 option replaced with a quick electric powertrain like that of the new Electrified G80.
Genesis will release more details over the next several months. The 2023 G90 is expected to reach dealerships in mid-2022.
