Gas Falls Below $3 Per Gallon

Gas pumps rest unused
  • The nationwide average price of a gallon of gas sits at $2.999 today, according to AAA — a 4-year low
  • Experts say it could fall further as the holidays approach

The nationwide average price of a gallon of gasoline is $2.999 this morning, according to AAA. Fuel price tracking app GasBuddy says it’s the lowest nationwide average since May of 2021.

“Overall demand is low this time of year, which helps keep pump prices down. The national average has seen few fluctuations in 2025 thanks to low crude oil prices and no major storms affecting Gulf Coast refineries,” explains AAA.

Americans burned nearly the same amount of gasoline the week ending Nov. 21 as they did a year ago, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Prices could continue to fall. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, explains, “With refinery maintenance largely complete and OPEC increasing oil production for December, oil prices have struggled. Combine those factors, and you have a solid recipe for continued downward pressure on gas prices in the weeks ahead. A few dozen stations are already offering gas under $2 per gallon, and we could see that number grow as we move further into the holiday season. It couldn’t come at a better time for Americans — with relief arriving just as the holidays kick off.”

Prices remain stable for those who drive without gasoline. AAA notes, “The national average per kWh of electricity at a public EV charging station stayed the same this past week at 38 cents.”

Charging at home is typically much less expensive than charging in public. But electricity rates can vary dramatically from state to state.
