Ford and Google have announced an extensive 6-year partnership that will bring Android-based operating systems to Ford’s cars, and Google Cloud services to Ford’s factories.
For shoppers, it’s the former bit of news that matters. By 2023, Ford and Lincoln vehicles will carry an infotainment system that uses Google Voice Assistant, Google Maps, and the Google Play Store to power in-vehicle entertainment. Drivers will even be able to adjust some car functions, such as climate control, with voice commands.
Ford says its cars will continue to be compatible with Apple CarPlay, and Amazon’s Alexa will remain an option.
General Motors, Mitsubishi, Nissan, and Volvo already use Google software to power vehicle infotainment systems. But Ford’s announcement appears to be more extensive than those agreements. The interface will be unique to Ford – not the Android Automotive experience currently found in cars from several manufacturers.
