Ford will charge you $495 for your frunk.

Your what?

Your frunk. Front trunk. Many of today’s electric vehicles (EVs) have a storage space under the hood much like the one traditionally found in the back of a car. EVs keep most of the parts that make them go — batteries and motors — under the passenger cabin. That can leave open space up front, which designers tend to turn into storage.

Frunks are smaller than trunks. But they tend to appear in cars that also have trunks, or SUVs that also have rear cargo areas, making them convenient places to store small items out of sight. Many automakers store charging cords in frunks. Frunks is a fun word to write.

Every Ford Mustang Mach-E sold since the model debuted for the 2021 model year has included a frunk about the size of a standard 52-quart picnic cooler. You can even use it as one — a drain in the bottom makes filling it with ice an option.

But, for the 2026 model year, the frunk is now an added-cost option. It recently appeared on the Ford website’s build-and-price tool with a $495 price tag.

Ford Authority reports that the company deleted the molded-in-plastic part because owners were rarely using it. But they replaced it with a molded-in-plastic cover that likely doesn’t cost much less to make and install, so we’re not sure the logic makes much sense.

Many rivals, including the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Tesla Model Y, and Kia EV6 give you access to the space under the hood for no added fee.
