The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is already a quick machine. Even the base model goes from 0 to 60 mph in under five seconds. It’s already a critical success — winning the 2021 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year award. It earns praise from most reviewers, including our own. And it’s already a sales success. The First Edition sold out before the first car was delivered to a customer.
So what will a faster edition, with a price tag still under $65,000, do?
We’ll find out in two days. Ford begins taking reservations for the Mustang Mach-E GT (starting at $59,900) and GT Performance ($64,900) on April 28.
The GT offers 480 horsepower — up from 266 in the base model. And, while you can argue that the Mach-E, with its four doors and SUV stance, is not truly worthy of the Mustang name, we would like to point out that even the 2021 Mustang Mach 1 claims only 460 horses.
On top of having more horses than the gasoline-powered Mach 1 sports car, the all-electric Mach-E GT boasts a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.8 seconds and has a range of 250 miles.
The GT Performance model uses the same two motors (one per axle) and has the same horsepower output but is tweaked for slightly more torque. Combined with grippier Pirelli summer tires, this cuts the performance model’s 0-60 mph time to 3.5 seconds. It also carries bigger Brembo brakes and a MagneRide suspension. The upgrades do rob the GT Performance of just a bit of range. Ford says it will go 235 miles between charges (a claim the EPA has not yet tested).
Both models come with an Unbridled Extend drive mode designed for track use, which modifies traction and stability control and offer Ford’s new BlueCruise hands-free driving tech.
