Ford Reopens Mach-E Orders, Raises Prices

2022 Ford Mustang Mach-e in red.The good news: You can once again place an order for the long-sold-out Ford Mustang Mach-E. The bad news: It will cost you more than the last time you checked.

About the Mach-E

The Mustang Mach-E is one of two electric vehicles (EVs) Ford sells today (the F-150 Lightning electric pickup is the other). It’s not Ford’s first electric car, but it is the first of a new generation the company sees as key to its future.

It uses the Mustang name and borrows some styling from the current Mustang, but the Mach-E is no muscle car. It’s a 2-row midsize SUV with sporty intentions. Base models accelerate quickly for such a big vehicle. High-performance GT models get from 0 to 60 mph in a startling 3.5 seconds.

Our test drivers found the ride a little stiff, but that suits its sporty character. The Mach-E is good for up to 314 miles of range depending on trim and options, but our test drivers found charging a bit slow.

Buyers in a Long Line

The biggest problem with the Mach-E has been finding one. Ford sold out of the 2022 edition months ago.

That may be partly a strategic decision. Ford leaders have been publicly discussing moving toward a custom-order model where every buyer orders the car they want before the factory builds it.

Or it may simply be happening because Ford underestimated demand. The company has reportedly delayed plans for the electric Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator SUVs to focus factory resources on building more Mach-E models.

There is still a queue of buyers who haven’t received their 2022 Mach-E. Ford says those buyers will receive a “private offer” to convert their orders to 2023. We don’t know whether they’ll be asked to pay 2022 prices, 2023 prices, or something in between.

Changes for 2023

Ford has made few changes for the new model year. Ford says battery range is up 13 miles on Premium models with the extended-range battery and the all-wheel-drive system the company calls “eAWD.” Ford’s Co-Pilot360 suite of driver aids is now standard on all trim levels. Select trim levels get a 90-day trial of Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driving system.

High demand, though, means an automaker can raise prices. Ford is set to open orders for the 2023 Mach-E next Tuesday. Depending on trim level, the changes vary from $3,000 to more than $8,000.
