Ford has recalled 87 hybrid vehicles because a software problem can cause them to shift into neutral unexpectedly while in motion. Drivers can shift back into drive after the car coasts to a stop, but will then have limited speed until they restart.
Recalled models include some, but not all, examples of the:
- 2022-2024 Ford Maverick Hybrid
- 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid
The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that a software error “can result in a forced neutral condition while driving.” The vehicle will then coast to a stop and enter Park mode. Drivers can shift back into drive, but will find the car in a “limp home” mode that limits speed to 30 mph until they restart.
Dealers will fix the problem by updating the software. Software updates are typically quick service appointments.
By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.
Automakers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely get them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. To find out if your car is one of them, check the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
