Ford Recalls Mach-E SUVs That Can Trap Occupants

Ford recalled 197,432 Mustang Mach-E SUVs from model years 2021-2025 because, under certain conditions, they can trap occupants in their rear seats.

Electric cars like the Mach-E have both a large battery that provides power for forward motion and a smaller, 12-volt battery like those found in gas-powered vehicles, which powers accessories in the cabin.

Ford told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that, if the driver turns off the car and exits while the 12-volt battery is nearly depleted, the rear door exterior latches might stay locked. The driver would not be able to unlock them with the key fob.

Inside door latches would still work, enabling adults to escape. But small children who couldn’t operate the latches could get stuck — a dangerous situation in hot weather.

Ford is not aware of any injuries related to the problem, though at least six owners have notified Ford of the issue.

Dealers will fix the issue with a software update to ensure that owners can still unlock the car even with a low 12-volt battery.

As with all recall repairs, the fix is free. Manufacturers attempt to contact every owner but don’t always reach them all with the news. Find out if your car has any outstanding recalls at our recall center.
