Ford Recalls 700,000 SUVs Over Fire Risk

Ford has recalled 694,271 compact SUVs because of an engine problem that can lead to an underhood fire. The move comes after a yearlong government safety investigation.

The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “A fuel injector may crack, resulting in fuel or vapor migrating to and accumulating near ignition sources, resulting in potential underhood fire.”

Ford is still developing a long-term remedy for the problem. In the short term, dealers will update engine control software to include a fuel injector leak detection system.

While we don’t know what the long-term solution is, it may involve replacing entire engines or significant parts of them. Bloomberg reports that Ford has warned investors that this recall could cost the company $570 million.
