Ford and its Lincoln luxury brand recalled 59,006 vehicles equipped with engine block heaters because the devices can develop a short circuit that might trigger a vehicle fire.
Recalled models include some, but not all, examples of the:
- 2016-2018 and 2020-2023 Ford Explorer
- 2016-2019 Lincoln MKC
- 2019-2020 Ford Fusion
- 2019-2024 Ford Ranger
- 2020-2022 Lincoln Corsair
- 2022-2024 Ford Maverick
The engine block heaters, Ford says, can leak coolant. That leaking coolant leaves behind residue that conducts electricity, which could trigger a short-circuit. A short circuit could then start a fire in the engine.
As the problem develops, Ford says, owners might notice coolant spots on the ground where they park their vehicle.
The company knows of at least “6 customer complaints, 21 Transport Canada log claims, and 30 legal claims, representing a total of 46 unique VINs that allege vehicle fire due to the block heater. The majority of the incidents occurred in Canada.”
Dealers will replace the engine block heater with a redesigned part to fix the problem.
Dealers never charge for recall repairs.
