Ford Mustang To Debut Dirt-Road Mach-E Rally

The Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally seen from a front quarter angleFord may have borrowed the name of its iconic muscle car for an electric SUV starting in 2021. But you haven’t seen a Mustang Mach-E tearing up a trail, have you?

That may change soon.

Ford will use this week’s Goodwood Festival of Speed to unveil the Mustang Mach-E Rally, an off-road version of its electric SUV.

Now, we know what you’re thinking. “An off-road version of an SUV? What’s next, a boat meant for the water?”

But the Mustang Mach-E has never been anyone’s idea of an off-roader. It’s so low to the ground and tuned for road use that the IRS briefly classified it as a sedan for tax credit purposes earlier this year (then rethought its decision).

The low stance has changed for the Rally version. Ford hasn’t revealed specifications, but teaser photos show a higher ride height and a set of all-terrain tires. We wouldn’t be surprised to see some off-road driving modes with creative names. After all, Ford is the company behind the Goes Over Any type of Terrain (GOAT) system in the Bronco.

It’s also not the off-road Mustang we wanted. But we may still get that.

We’re left speculating for now. Ford promises details soon and says the model “will be available first in the U.S. and Europe.” Price is a mystery as well. The Mustang Mach-E starts at $42,995. We expect a Rally edition to carry a price tag closer to the $60,000 line.
