The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
- After a second price increase in three months, the least-expensive Ford F-150 Lightning now costs $51,974, plus $1,795 for delivery
- Luxury Lightning Platinum models can push into the low $100,000-range
Almost everything about the Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck was remarkable when it first launched for the 2022 model year. But perhaps nothing was as shocking as its sub-$40,000 starting price.
It was too good to last.
Ford has now raised prices on its first electric pickup twice in three months. The base model Lightning Pro now costs almost $12,000 more than it did at the start of summer. The new sticker? $51,974, plus $1,795 for delivery.
That sounds like bad news for buyers, but we should point out that Ford has sold every electric truck it can build this year and next. Shoppers attempting to place an order today can only sign up for updates on when the next set of reservations will be available.
The First Mainstream Electric Truck
The F-150 Lightning is the all-electric version of Ford’s best-selling F-150 pickup. It comes in 452-horsepower and 580-horsepower versions. Its longest-range version can drive up to 320 miles before needing to recharge.
It offers more torque than any other F-150 and can serve as a battery backup for an entire home in the event of a blackout (Ford says the Intelligent Backup Power system could run a typical house for as long as three days).
Like most full-size trucks, the Lightning can be anything from a basic work truck to a luxury vehicle, depending on trim and options. But, with the new pricing, the top-of-the-line Platinum edition can carry a six-figure price when fully equipped.
According to the IRS, some models of Lightning qualify for a federal EV tax incentive of up to $7,500. Dealers can now offer the incentive as an up-front discount. It applies only to trucks with sticker prices under $80,000, which excludes the fanciest Lightning models.
