Ford Explorer Timberline: The Classic Midsize SUV Gets Off-Road Skills

Lots of midsize SUVs offer an off-road-oriented trim. Not many of them, though, are truly meant for consistent, heavy trail use. This one is.

Ford has announced a trail-ready version of its venerable Explorer SUV. The 2021 Ford Explorer Timberline is serious about going off-road.

Buyers can order the Timberline now for delivery this summer. It starts at $45,765, plus a $1,245 destination charge.

Higher Ride Height

The Timberline model sits nearly an inch higher than the standard Explorer, using heavy-duty shocks borrowed from the Police Interceptor version of the Explorer and re-tuned for off-road use. The springs, stabilizer bars, and steering rack are re-tuned for the new assignment. A front new rebound spring softens the ride over the rough stuff.

Timberline-specific front and read facias give this Explorer an approach angle of 23.5 degrees and a maximum departure angle of 23.7 degrees. Front and rear skid plates protect the underbody if you play it a little too close with those angles.

All-wheel drive is standard, with a new Torsen limited-slip rear differential. The Timberline comes only with a 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder powerplant making 300 horsepower and 10-speed automatic transmission. A Terrain Management System gives a remarkable seven drive modes, including Trail and Deep Snow/Sand, for changing conditions.

Exclusive Color

It’s easy to tell the Timberline from other Explorers. It comes only in a Forged Green Metallic color not offered on other Explorers. Its unique front fascia features a Carbonized Gray grille, exclusive fog lamps, and bright red tow hooks. A separate lighting package adds additional trail lights to the grille.

Inside, trim panels are a Deep Cypress color. The instrument panel is Stone Mesh, and Deep Tangerine stitching lines the seats. On a more practical level, the cabin features rubber floor mats and easy-cleaning ActiveX upholstery. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are standard.

The Timberline may be a worthy rival to the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, and though it doesn’t have the cool factor of the Ford Bronco, this 3-row SUV is an option for those who need more space.
