Ford will open orders for its new E-Transit electric van this summer, but companies that intend to order the vans can register their interest today. Prices will range from $43,295 to $52,690. The van will be eligible for the federal government’s full $7,500 EV tax credit.
Ford expects demand to exceed supply at first. The company plans a pilot program shipping early examples to key customers at select sites around the country. “To date, more than 450 commercial customers in North America, including 200 top fleets and fleet management companies, have said they’re interested in purchasing the all-new E-Transit,” the company says.
The company currently sells a well-regarded electric crossover, the 2021 Mustang Mach-E, to private customers. It plans to offer an electric pickup in the near future. Ford has not announced plans for an electric version of its smaller Transit Connect van, though we’d be surprised not to see one eventually. Small businesses often use the Transit Connect for deliveries. That makes it likely to drive predictable, short routes well suited to an EV.
The E-Transit is an all-electric version of America’s best-selling commercial van, the Transit. It comes in “eight configurations, including cargo van with three roof heights and three lengths, plus chassis cab and cutaway models.” Ford estimates that about 40 percent of customers are “leaning toward high-roof vans and 60 percent pointing to medium-roof, low-roof, cutaway and chassis cab versions.”
With a 67 kilowatt-hour battery, Ford says the E-Transit has a range of about 126 miles. Customer telematics data show that the average commercial van drives 74 miles per day, the company says. Customers can use its two-way charging to power tools in the field.
