Ford Motor has announced that owners of 2010-2016 Ford and Lincoln vehicles not equipped with built-in modem access can now step up to a full range of enhanced connectivity via a new Ford SmartLink option available through dealers across this summer. The new Ford SmartLink setup has a 4G LTE-enabled device that plugs into a vehicle’s OBD II port. It creates a hotspot capable of supporting up to eight devices.

Working with a companion App and Web Portal, the Ford SmartLink system also can be used to remotely activate a features including vehicle location assistance, vehicle health and security alerts and the ability to schedule service appointments.

Raj Nair, executive vice president, Global Product Development, and chief technical officer noted that Ford spent two years working with Delphi Automotive and Verizon Telematics to develop SmartLink so that it would work seamlessly across the entire vehicle lineup. “From security to performance, we’ve conducted extensive testing and made a number of improvements to ensure Ford SmartLink enhances the customer experience for our owners.” Pricing for the SmartLink option and associated data plans will be announced later.
