First Drive: Rivian R1S Electric SUV

Electric vehicle (EV) startup Rivian became the first automaker to deliver an electric pickup last year. As with every startup in the car business, the company faces questions about its ability to survive long-term. But its R1T pickup was an immediate hit with reviewers. Four separate electric motors – one for each wheel – gave it unmatched rock-crawling agility. Innovative storage solutions made it one of the most easy-to-live-with trucks we’ve ever seen.

Americas buy more SUVs than pickups, though. So Rivian’s next trick is a more mainstream vehicle – the R1S SUV.

Our Micah Muzio got some time behind the wheel, both on- and off-road, to see if the trick worked.

His impressions? It offers an “upscale yet welcoming feel” and thoughtful design touches that set Rivian apart (the removable Bluetooth speaker that doubles as a camp lantern is a cool touch). On the road, it’s “quick, comfortable, stable, and fun.”

But Rivians aren’t about ride quality for the commute. This is the kind of vehicle with removable flashlights built into the doors. Rivian assumes you’re going to leave the pavement. What happens when you do?
