To say the Toyota Tacoma is America’s best-selling midsize truck is to undersell things. Last month, more than a third of all midsize and small trucks sold in America were Taco trucks. The Chevrolet Colorado came in second with less than half its total. That’s the story most months.
So, a new Tacoma is big news for truck fans. Yet new Tacomas don’t come along often.
But the 2024 Tacoma is entirely new from the wheels up. Roskelly recently had the chance to drive the truck. The all-new Tacoma, he reports, “takes all the best things people love about it and modernizes them.”
The update includes a hybrid option (first among midsize trucks) and an optional adjustable suspension.
The new base model engine is a turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cylinder called the i-Force. It makes 278 horsepower when paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and 270 horsepower with a 6-speed stick. Yes, Toyota still offers one.
The new engine is both more powerful and more efficient than the outgoing V6. “The main takeaway here is you no longer have to floor the Tacoma every time you want to just speed up a little bit,” Roskelly says.
Even in non-hybrid form, the new Tacoma is heavier than the old V6. But you can’t feel it, Roskelly reports. Steering feel is “pretty light, but no lighter than the old Tacoma’s.”
The interior, he says, is a “fun place to spend time,” with playful color options and, on some trims, a massive 14-inch multimedia display. See his first drive video for more.
