For the 2022 model year, BMW will introduce an electric car that delivers what you expect from a BMW. Called the 2022 BMW i4, it’s the sort of crisp-handling sport sedan the German automaker built its reputation on. It just happens to use electricity instead of gasoline to thrill you.
The i4 comes in base eDrive 40 trim for $55,400, or a high-performance M50 model for $65,900 . Each also requires a $995 destination fee. The i4 reaches U.S. dealerships in the first quarter of 2022.
EPA range estimates are now out for the i4. There’s a headline-grabbing number, but also a lot of asterisks shoppers need to be aware of.
The base i4 eDrive 40, the EPA says, should drive 301 miles between charges. With 335 horsepower and a rear-wheel-drive setup, the i4 eDrive 40 is something like an electric 4-Series. That base model rides on 18-inch wheels. A step up to 19-inch wheels cuts the range to 282 miles.
A high-performance i4 M50 pays an even bigger range penalty. It uses two motors, one per axle, for all-wheel drive grip and a horsepower rating of 536. But all the added weight cuts range down to 270 miles when equipped with the base, 19-inch wheels. Bumping the M model up to 20-inch wheels cuts that range all the way down to 227 miles.
