Driving the 2026 Volvo EX30 Cross Country Twin Motor

We know the next thing, we think, because of the last thing.

In 2026, this is arguably the organizing principle of our whole society. We are watching large language models change much of how our world works, and they are fundamentally a predictive technology. They assemble the next sentence from all the prior ones.

Cars are also predictable. If you’ve driven a couple of Hondas, you know roughly what the next Honda will be like.

I’ve driven a lot of Volvos. I know roughly what to expect from the next one.

At least, I thought I did.

Then, Volvo loaned me the 2026 Volvo EX30 Cross Country to test drive for a very snowy week around Washington, D.C. It broke all my assumptions.

It’s an electric vehicle (EV) with hatchback proportions (though advertised as an SUV). It’s exceptionally high-performance – not often a Volvo trait. It’s a luxury car, but with a tech-forward, spare style different from Volvo’s usual cushioned luxury ethos. Startingly minimalist and quick, it aims more at Tesla’s usual lane than those of the European automakers Volvo typically competes with.

It’s unusual in many ways – the glovebox isn’t even where you’re used to it. But, for a certain type of driver, it might be a terrific choice.

It also might be available for a steal. Reports say Volvo will cancel the car, at least in the U.S., after the 2026 model year. Dealers sometimes accept lower offers for a car that an automaker is no longer advertising.

EX30s are still on dealer lots and still available for order now.

Which Trim Level

The EX30 comes in standard and Cross Country variants, with the latter featuring higher ground clearance and matte-black, scratch-resistant cladding. The standard variant is available with a single motor or in a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) setup. All Cross Country models are AWD. My tester was the Cross Country, available only in Twin Motor Performance Ultra trim.

Favorite Feature

Volvo says the EX30 Cross Country is a light off-road variant, but it begs for a winding road. The combination of 422 horsepower with the snap of electric acceleration, AWD grip, and a tiny wheelbase makes this an exciting car to drive.

A relatively small, flat-bottom, flat-top steering wheel and communicative handling make it a joy at low speeds, too. Would you show up at a track day in your Volvo off-roader? With this one, I would.

What It’s Like to Drive

Electric cars accelerate with a sudden surge that gas cars never will, because an electric motor delivers 100% of its torque at zero RPM. In contrast, a gas-powered car typically has to build RPM to build torque, which takes time.

Put two motors making more than 400 hp in a small car, and that acceleration can be laugh-out-loud surprising. The EX30 CC gets from zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds – supercar numbers not long ago.

Handling is firm, and a small wheelbase means a tight turning circle. This is, quite simply, a performance car in disguise as a dirt roader.

One sour note, however – its range is limited. Volvo calculates this version at just 227 miles. I had it during winter and found the real-world figures lower. At one point, I charged the battery to 100% (something experts say you should do only occasionally), and in 44-degree weather, the meter read just 187 miles.

That’s more than enough for daily driving, but limits how useful this might be as an only car.

Interior Comfort and Technology

The EX30’s cabin design is a unique blend of Silicon Valley and Stockholm.

This is quite possibly the most minimalist cabin I’ve been in in 25 years. Nearly every feature is controlled through a centrally located touchscreen, 12.3 inches corner to corner, mounted in portrait style.

A few steering-wheel-mounted controls let you page through songs, adjust volume, and turn on smart cruise control without tapping that screen. But you use it for everything else, even for opening the small, centrally located glovebox.

It lacks a screen or instrument gauges in front of the driver.

Material choices are tasteful throughout. My tester had a soothing color scheme of soft greens and mid grays. Volvo has made interesting use of wool in interiors in recent years. These seats are upholstered in a mix of Nordico (a faux leather) and wool blend. Textile material on the dash and doors adds a softness.

The rear seats, however, are very tight. Volvo lists rear legroom at 32.3 inches – one of the smallest figures of any subcompact SUV. Cargo room, at about 12 cubic feet, is also small.

Limitations

The small rear dimensions mean a one- or two-person household could make good use of this, but I’d question it for anyone who routinely carries three people. It charges relatively quickly, but its limited range might also make it a great second car.

Key Considerations

Normally, when a car is canceled, selection starts to dwindle late in the year as production winds down. The EX30, however, is a special case. Volvo doesn’t plan to stop building it. They’re just going to halt deliveries to the U.S. It may stay on sale overseas for years to come. That could mean that orders are still possible right up to the end of 2026, though dealers may eventually entertain lower offers for models still on the lot as the deadline nears. As that happens, this becomes a fun-to-drive, attractive little luxury EV at a reasonable price.
