Corvette Zora: GM President’s Remarks Renew White Whale Rumors

A 2023 Corvette Z06 Coupe is parked on a tarmac. It is orange. We see it from a front quarter angle, facing slightly to our right.“You won’t be able to imagine” it from a performance standpoint.

It will “set the standard of the world for performance.”

If only anyone knew what it was.

GM President Mark Reuss told investors at the company’s Investor Day presentation last week that two new Chevy sports cars are on the way. Both will ride on the same mid-engine architecture as the current Corvette. The eighth generation of Chevy’s halo car – purists call it the C8 – is currently offered in 490-horsepower or 670-horsepower Z06 form.

Moving the Corvette to a mid-engine platform put it into competition with exotic supercars from Ferrari and Lamborghini, despite its far lower starting price and lack of four-figure power.

But Reuss promised a more powerful version by 2024, which rumors say will wear the Corvette Grand Sport badge.

He also, however, teased something else.

GM didn’t allow reporters to see images of the cars. But those who heard the presentation say Reuss promised an “incredible performance car” that will “put the world on notice.” He said it will ride on the C8 architecture but didn’t name it.

It may wear the moniker Corvette Zora. A document leaked in 2020 projected a 1,000-horsepower, range-topping hybrid Corvette under that name by 2025.

We’ll bring more news, or white whale sightings, when we have something to share.
